MEMS is the acronym of Micro Electro-Mechanical System: it indicates, in electronics, several devices having the capability to convert mechanical quantities into electrical ones, taking advantage from some materials peculiarities. This way quantities can be measured with electronic equipment (see also details in Wikipedia introduction).
Typical MEMS applications are acceleration and tilt measurement or earth magnetic field measurement. MEMS size is extremely small, thus allowing to manufacture accelerometers, gyrocompass and other devices at a very low cost in respect to conventional solutions.
MEMS is not really something new. However last year ST Microelectronics Company introduced a new line of really interesting MEMS devices, having high resolution and stability.
Atmel Bitcloud
Atmel Corporation offers a complete hardware-software solution to implement wireless devices based on stack Zigbee, Zigbee Pro and 6LowPan.

BitCloud philosophy is simple: Atmel allows developers to use several firmware libraries that manage communications according to the selected standard (e.g. Zigbee). Thank to these libraries, an experienced and well equipped company is able to implement dedicated devices, rather than utilising third parties modules with standard configuration.
This is the reason why we are deeply investigating BitCloud. We already acquired all development tools and we are concentrating some resources on this system in order to understand all its potentialities.
